Save Money, Save Lives—Audit the Sheriff
Over the past 10 years, the Alameda County jail population has decreased by half—so why is the sheriff's budget increasing?
Under the sheriff's "watch" there have been increasing deaths in the jails, abuse of people by sheriff's deputies, and support of white supremacists from his department. Yet his budget continues to grow. Meanwhile, people in power aren't investing in the resources our communities really need—like jobs, healthcare, housing, education, and more.
It’s time to stop blindly investing in traditional public safety practices that don’t work and start putting our funds into smart, long-term solutions that help our communities thrive.
Join the Ella Baker Center and our allies at the Justice Reinvestment Coalition as we demand that the Board of Supervisors audit Sheriff Greg Ahern's department.
An audit of the Sheriff will reveal how this department is spending taxpayer dollars, improve transparency and accountability, and reveal potential savings that can be invested directly back into communities to promote greater, stability, security and safety.
Find out who your supervisor is and call them today to ask for an audit of the sheriff.

My name is _________ and I live in _(city)___. I am calling to ask for an audit of Alameda County Sheriff, Gregory Ahern.Over the past 10 years, the Alameda County jail population has decreased by half, and yet the sheriff’s budget continues to increase.
Under the sheriff's watch there have been increasing deaths in the jails, abuse of people by sheriff's deputies, and support of white supremacists from his department. Our county wastes too much money on locking people up, when we should be investing in the resources our communities need. I am asking you to audit the sheriff because we need to know why his budget is increasing and how he’s spending his money.
