TAKE ACTION | RISE ACT

Senate Bill 180, the Repeal Ineffective Sentencing Enhancement Act, passed out of the California State Assembly — and was just signed by California Governor Jerry Brown officially becoming law! Congratulations! Because of people power and your commitment we successfully passed the biggest sentencing reform in the history of the California State Legislature, with a 41 to 33 vote.

Authored by Senator Holly Mitchell, this bill would reduce racial disparities in the criminal justice system, restore balance in the judicial process, and free up funds to be invested in communities.

Watch this special message from our Executive Director Zachary Norris as he reflects on the victory.

Thank you for organizing with us, for making calls, sending letters, lobbying, and sharing stories. We know that drug war policies and extreme sentencing have destabilized our communities for far too long, and now our legislators have joined us in taking action to begin to undo this damage.
